The Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) fully approves a loan of up to $150M to support the University’s growth. A public benefit assessment forecasts that this project will boost Darwin’s economy by $599M over a 30-year period through increased urbanisation and economic activity.
CDU advertises for a Principal Design Consultant and sub-consultants to progress the project through the design development and construction documentation phases.
Construction begins on the $240M Education and Community Precinct, creating jobs and stimulating the NT economy.
Excavation of the ECP was completed ahead of schedule, involving the digging of a 73-metre-wide, 71-metre-long hole to a depth of seven metres to accommodate a two-level basement carpark.
The final designs for the ECP reveal a striking facade designed to provide the best solar access to the heritage-listed boab tree and will be the new home of the CDU Library and Library & Archives NT.
Major milestone reached with the pouring of the basement slab. The 2,700 cubic metre slab formed the base of the two-level underground carpark. With the pouring of the slab, the risks presented by the upcoming wet season are significantly reduced.
A topping-out ceremony is held onsite to celebrate the completion of super structure works. This significant milestone was honoured with the gift of a tree, as per tradition.

After more than 550,000 work hours put into its construction, Charles Darwin University officially opens the doors of its new city campus, with Federal Minister Hon Catherine King MP in attendance to cut the ribbon and unveil the plaque.
